New Mannheim depot opens

  • Total investment of €15 million
  • 50 extra staff
  • Use of electric vehicles planned

Neuenstein, 28 October 2019. A smooth transition at GLS in Mannheim: following a ten-month construction phase, the parcel service provider has today opened its new site in the Rhine–Neckar region.

The nerve centre of the 10,000 square metre sorting area is the cutting-edge parcel sorting system. In combination with 30 loading gates, 15 unloading gates and a manoeuvring area of roughly 30,000 square metres , this system facilitates seamless flows of up to 80,000 parcels a day (more than twice as many as in the old depot) – just in time for the upcoming peak period. As such, senders can still be assured of reliable delivery times and unwaveringly high quality.

As of 4 November, a regional hub function for GLS depots in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and parts of Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg will also go into operation at the site. Parcels exchanged between these depots will then pass through Mannheim rather than the central GLS hub in Neuenstein. This saves both time and lorry mileage, thus benefiting the environment. What’s more, electric vehicles will soon be deployed from the Mannheim depot, with four cutting-edge charging stations in place to begin with.

The new depot is much more comfortable for employees and delivery drivers: it boasts a raised floor with underfloor heating, allowing delivery vehicles to be loaded at ground level. The conveyor belt system is now much quieter. Commercial employees have a generous 600 square metres of office space at their disposal. GLS has already managed to fill 50 newly created positions as from 1 November.
